Brand Success in Today’s AI-Powered Landscape

AI visibility is a top priority for most top brands. Marketing leaders realize that a significant portion of your traditional marketing funnel now includes AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants. Keeping your brand prominent and thriving in this new search landscape can be tricky. The tools and how people use them continue to change very quickly, and deep, reliable data on what is working can be hard to get. So what do we know about successful AI signals?

Specificity matters.

This isn’t new, but its importance has sky rocketed. Broad information about general topics are less likely to get any references and citations. An article or webpage on “How to improve email marketing” is less likely to result in citations than “B2B healthcare company uses dynamic email segmentation to increase brand engagement.”

The first article might get retrieved and scraped… along with 10 other posts on the same topic. Then AI mashes them altogether and provides a summarized response with limited brand citation. The more specific and unique your content, the more likely your brand will be mentioned.

One major caveat here is… don’t produce a huge quantity of information targeting long-tail, low-volume content just for the sake of chasing after these targets. That is a sure fire way to get labelled spammy and never cited. Produce deep, rich content on areas that are critical to your users. Provide good, specific information that is helpful.

Authority and credibility wins.

Again-not new, but the level people are seeing authority impact citations is staggering. Multiple studies have shown that high-authority domains are very, very heavily weighted. Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Medium, Reddit, .gov sites, Atlantic, Forbes…. these are consistently the top winners.

Of course, it depends heavily on the topic, questions, prompts. So even though smaller brands will have a harder battle for visibility, it is still possible. This is where you can go back to specificity. Define your very specific niche, and then build your credibility in that area. Have a clear point of view, prove expertise, show original insights, and build strong authority signals.

This type of authority can mean original, proprietary research, strong digital PR, and deep industry connections. It’s not fast or cheap, and amusingly… it is the opposite of what many digital marketers are doing by pushing out large quantities of AI-driven content. That won’t work… it’s too easy, so too many people are doing it and they’re just getting lost in the noise.

Watch brand mentions.

Even in the best case scenario, where your brand is a heavy player in your industry, AI won’t just read your website for information about your brand. You need to be analyzing and creating a strategy for brand mentions on product review sites, trade publications, industry press, forums.

The sources will differ depending on your industry areas, and you should know the major third-party sources that matter to your industry as well as areas that matter nearly everywhere (e.g., Reddit is a top citation in most AI chatbots across a huge variety of topics and industry areas).

Brands will have a much harder time pushing any bad brand mentions out of top searches or most recent posts. AI can scrape deeper, more easily now. So take customer reviews seriously, fix any inaccuracies as quickly as you can, and earn authentic positive mentions.

The quick wins days of AI is over.

AI assistants have gotten more sophisticated. We’ve definitely seen a huge downturn in listicles, comparison pages, and roundup articles in AI citations. They’re self-serving and prone to manipulation. They worked very well in earlier days of SEO, and they worked very well in the early days of AI citation targeting. But then they stop working for brands and actually cause AI search problems.

If you are looking for healthy, long-term, effective AI visibility strategies, we can help.
